Mechanical Hydro Engineer - Vancouver, Canada

A technical specialist within the Energy, Mining and Infrastructure sector is searching for a Mechanical Hydro Engineer for their office in Vancouver to being immediately. The chosen candidate MUST have at least 10 years of experience who’s able to engage with clients and provide a practical depth to their methodology.

Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Leading and managing the process of engineering commitments in accordance with scope, schedule, budget and procedures to ensure successful project completion
  • Resolving overall design and project execution issues, as required
  • Interfacing with other engineering disciplines involved in projects, as required
  • Developing preliminary and detailed designs as well as overseeing and guiding the preparation of mechanical drawings and engineering specifications for construction
  • Being an active participant in technical design reviews and calculation checks
  • Maintaining good working relationships with the internal stakeholders, including the management team, and clients
  • Establishing and implementing improvements to existing methods, procedures and tool sets
  • Managing project resource assignments while ensuring a continuous career development of staff
  • Based in Vancouver office, but willing to provide technical support to other waterpower offices

Education, Skills and Qualifications for this position include:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized and accredited institution
  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering will be considered an asset
  • A minimum of 8 years of professional experience, and at least 5 years of relevant experience in the following:
  • Design of penstocks (buried penstocks, above ground penstocks and liners) 
  • Design of gates and mechanical operating systems including (Vertical gates, Radial gates, Bulkheads, Stoplogs, valves)  
  • Balance of Plant design for hydroelectric facilities including piping and other mechanical systems for turbine generators
  • Hydro turbine design requirements and systems, and related
  • Experience with hoist design (Wire rope hoists, Hydraulic hoists, Gantry cranes),
  • Proficiency with Computer Design Tools (Mathcad, AutoCAD, Inventor, Solidworks) will be considered an asset
  • Experience with hydro turbine performance and condition assessments
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) programs
  • Knowledge of Canadian and provincial codes and standards
  • Solid experience in the preparation of reports and specifications is required
  • Experience in quality assurance inspection of mechanical equipment will be considered an asset
  • Strong written and verbal communication skill, interpersonal and relationship management skills
  • Strong client focus and a desire to achieve results including the ability to manage multiple priorities and time lines
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in BC or other Canadian Province (candidates with strong international experience and eligibility for P. Eng. designation in Canada will be considered)
  • Site and commissioning experience will be considered an asset  

Salary & Package:

The Gross Basic salary is +100,000 CAD per annum (Depending on experience & Qualifications), Pension Plan and Company Benefits.
